Amar

fabric technologist

I'm Amar and for the last three years I've been a Fabric Technologist at George.

Previously I worked in a variety of fabric manufacturing jobs so the progression to the retail sector was the obvious next step for me. I joined George because I wanted to work with a market-leading brand and to use my manufacturing experience to help it to become an even better performing company. I'd always been an ASDA and George customer too.

I source fabrics for George Jerseywear from suppliers all round the world, whilst keeping my colleagues at George fully informed of developments in fabric technology and making sure that all the fabric we use meets our very high standards of quality and durability.

In any one day I might work with buyers or designers in Lutterworth and fabric manufacturers in the Far East. As the person who has final sign off on whether a fabric passes our quality thresholds I weigh up the commercial and quality considerations to achieve the right balance.

My role involves influencing both internally at George and externally with suppliers. For example, I can suggest specific fabrics to our designers which will produce a better result and improve our products or I often work with our suppliers to advise them on production methods to reduce costs whilst making sure our clothes are even more affordable for our customers.

This means that my interpersonal skills are as important as my technical ones. I have to take a firm standpoint on things - and be very creative in the way I think about solutions to technical and commercial issues too.
