logistics planning manager
My name is Mike and I'm a Logistics Planning Manager for George.
I've been in fashion retailing ever since I left education. I first came into contact with George when I moved to a job working as a Merchandiser for a company which supplied them. I applied and made the switch over to actually working for George in 1998.
I started as a Merchandiser on Men's and Boys' Essentials until my manager asked if I'd instigate the launch of a system to track stock around the world. This got me involved in the supply side of things and I've been in the Logistics team since 2006.
On a typical day I go to various meetings which could be with a supplier to discuss even better ways of working or with colleagues to plan our network strategy. I might also be having one-to-ones with members of my team or with trading departments to discuss their product flow issues.
It's my responsibility to make sure that our distribution network works like clockwork and my small, close-knit team helps me to achieve this. I'm lucky that they're all passionate people with a great attitude and who are always willing to go that extra mile to get it right.
To be good at my job I think you've to be flexible, dynamic and prepared to lead by example. It's important that you can lead by encouragement and involvement, by coaching your team. This is not a "tell and do" organisation.
